Why Swim Lessons Matter?

Swimming is an important life skill that children and adults should learn as early as possible. There are many benefits in learning how to swim and it is an extremely important safety skill. Swimming is a unique activity that has the longevity of being a great form of exercise for toddlers, seniors and everyone in between.

Swim Lessons

Swim lessons are important because they help teach your child proper swimming techniques, but also because it encourages them to be independent in the water. Something that can be hard when mom and dad are trying to teach them at home. Swim lessons help children swim longer distances, learn different strokes, and be safe in and around the water.

Swim Lesson Benefits

Health and Fitness

We all know the importance of exercise for a healthy life.  Swimming is one of the absolute best forms of exercise as it works every muscle group in the body without putting stress on bones and joints.  Especially for children, it is a great way to burn off pent-up energy, and the swimming pool is a safe environment, as trained lifeguards and swim instructors will supervise and teach them valuable skills. Instilling the importance of health and fitness early on is important for children, as it will stay with them for life.

Social Skills

Swimming classes are held in small groups of children of a similar age and with similar abilities.  They will be able to interact with other children outside of school and learn valuable social skills. It’s another opportunity to make friends and have fun in a different environment than the classroom. Lessons typically include games and team activities to help make all kids feel comfortable in and around the pool.

Safety

Learning to swim is vital to ensure your child is safe around water.  There are many situations and opportunities for your child to come into contact with water throughout their lives, and those situations can become extremely dangerous very quickly if they are unable to swim.  Classes will help build up strength and endurance, as well as teach lifesaving skills that could one day save their own life or someone else’s.

Life Skill

Swimming is an important skill that will bring a lifetime of enjoyable experiences. From boat trips, to beaches, to pools, to all of the different water sports out there, the list goes on.  All of these experiences require the ability to swim, and as your child gets older they could find themselves excluded from such activities if they are unable to swim.

The Lafayette Family YMCA offers swim lessons for all ages from toddlers to adults at all skill levels. Lessons promote learning new skills and continuous progress by measuring your child’s progress throughout each session.
