The Lafayette Family YMCA Scheumann’s Safety Around Water 3rd Grade Initiative

At the Y, we believe water safety is an important life skill. This year, thanks to our generous donors, we’re able to offer a new Lafayette, Indiana water safety program, The Lafayette Family YMCA Scheumann’s Safety Around Water 3rd Grade Initiative.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 10 people die from drowning in the United States every day. The USA Foundation says participating in formal swim lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% for one to four year olds. In other words, learning water safety and swim skills is extremely important!

Information About the Program

The Lafayette Family YMCA Scheumann’s Safety Around Water 3rd Grade Initiative was made possible by donations from John and June Scheumann, Indiana State Senator Ron Alting of Lafayette, and Trane.

This Lafayette, Indiana water safety program is FREE to any third grader in Lafayette School Corporation elementary schools.

The program is designed to:

  • Teach children to react instinctively when faced with a threatening water situation
