Share The Love: The benefits of working out with a partner

It is that time of the year again with Valentine’s Day quickly approaching. Love is in the air!


This month at the Lafayette Family YMCA we are continuing to share the love by extending our no joiner’s fee for new members through the entire month of February! We announced at the beginning of the year that we have new membership categories and rates for those categories (you can read more about that here. As our social responsibility, we are dedicated to our community’s healthy living and want to help you succeed in whatever your health goals may be.

So why not take the opportunity to encourage your friends or family members to be a part of our Y family and spread the love?  You will feel good that you have encouraged them to join you in a journey to strengthen their spirit, mind, and body and you will gain a workout partner to help motivate you in a time of need (see, it’s a win, win situation!).  Everyone benefits and together as a community we can continue to impact lives and make a difference!

Benefits of a workout partner:

If you are struggling with your motivation, or you simply want to get more out of every workout you do, then one of the smartest moves you can make is to get a workout partner.  The right workout buddy helps you give it your all, and if you want great results then you have got to give it everything you’ve got.  Here are five benefits of having a good workout buddy.

1) Achieve your fitness goals.

Stanford University has found that, on average, simply receiving a phone call every two weeks can boost the amount of exercise you do by up to 78%.  The call in this study found out how much exercise was done in the previous week, how to increase exercise the following week, and would emphasize the importance of getting back on track if workouts were missed.  Even if it is just by phone, social support works.  So when you make the support face-to-face, it becomes even more powerful.  The more consistent you are with your workouts, the sooner you are going to achieve your fitness goals.

2) Working out becomes fun.

The more fun your workouts are, the more you are going to look forward to and be committed to them over the long-term.  You can still get a serious workout, without being serious.  Working out alone can get lonely, so just having that social contact – being able to laugh, encourage and motivate – will make that time together much more enjoyable.

When you’ve got someone else with you it is much less intimidating to start going to new classes, and using the free weights or other new exercise equipment. If you have always wanted to try out yoga or strength training but have not been able to build up the courage, get a buddy on board and go tackle it together!

4) Keeps your form on point.

In a perfect world, your workout buddy would be a personal trainer with years of experience, who could show you the perfect form of your exercises. However, even a friend can help guide, motivate and share their knowledge. Everyone has different backgrounds and experience, so while one friend may be more knowledgeable about group fitness, another may be an expert weight lifter. Use each other’s knowledge to learn more and correct previous mistakes.

5) Motivates and supports you.

For most people, having someone in your corner makes a huge difference to how motivated you are.  Having a good workout buddy, who motivates and supports you, will boost your commitment to your fitness goals and your confidence that you can achieve them.
