Camp History

Back in 1969 the Treece family had dreams of children swimming, boating, fishing, riding horses, experiencing nature, and enjoying the great outdoors. The Treece family graciously donated 40 beautiful acres to the Lafayette Family YMCA and it was so named “Camp Treece”. The YMCA also had the same vision for children.

Straight Arrow Day Camp was started and those first children left greatly enriched. They made memories, built lasting friendships, gained independence and self-confidence. They left camp feeling good about themselves and thankful for the friends they made. For the past 43 years, Straight Arrow Day Camp has become a tradition that has given children the opportunity to make their own special memories.

The facilities and programs have changed over time, but our mission has remained the same. At the YMCA, youth development, social responsibility, and healthy living make up who we are. Straight Arrow Day Camp reinforces the values you teach at home. Over the years our enrollment has grown to 800+ campers every summer. We are excited for another great summer in 2012 and look forward to meeting all of the campers.

Our camp is conveniently located just 15 miles southeast of Lafayette.

Trailblazer Camp

Trailblazer Camp is a two week camp that teaches leadership skills through various activities and challenges. Each camper will work to earn a bead for each skill accomplished in Safety, Nature Education, Cooperation, Patience, Responsibility, Honesty, Respect, and Caring. The campers work together on projects that encourage teamwork and fellowship. This camp is for children who have completed 5th grade.

Preschool Camp

This camp is a wonderful way to introduce your youngsters to some new experiences. These campers will participate in horseback riding, canoeing, fishing, archery, swimming, fun group games, and much more! Our small tribe numbers and experienced staff help keep the children safe and encourage them to participate. Preschool campers will also have a Family Night ceremony similar to the regular campers. Parents will still need to pick their children up at the YMCA on Friday and bring them out to camp on Friday evening.

Mini-Pathfinder Camp

Mini Pathfinder Camp is a 3 day, 2 night camp that allows the children to spend the night at Camp Straight Arrow. During these three days, campers participate in all of the regular day camp activities and get to go swimming daily. We will also get to play some fun group games like flashlight tag, watch movies under the stars, and make s’mores.

Transportation

We provide daily transportation from McCaw Park, Cumberland Elementary, and Happy Hollow Elementary. The YMCA is our gathering point for our bus trip to Straight Arrow Day Camp. Transportation costs $1 for every morning or afternoon that your child rides with us from one of the stops listed above. (whole week total = $9/child)
