No daylight or no motivation; whatever your reason, it just seems harder for people to keep up on their fitness goals during the winter. Here are a few tips to help you stay healthy this winter.
Treat yourself to some new gear.
You know that confident feeling you get the first time you wear some new workout gear to the gym? Research actually suggests that this feeling can be used as motivation for a workout. Every once in awhile, go ahead and treat yourself to some new gear. You’ll feel so good that you’ll want to show it off.
Alter workout times.
One reason people tend to miss their winter workouts is because of the lack of daylight. It’s hard to be motivated to workout when the sun goes down so early. You can fix this by altering your workout times. If you normally work out after work, try going before. If that’s not possible, maybe try to squeeze in a quick workout at lunch time. Do whatever you have to do to get to the gym; you’ll regret it if you skip too many workouts!
Limit the unhealthy food choices.
The best part of spring and summer is the fresh produce, but during the winter, all we can think about is ham, mashed potatoes, pie, and cookies. Try to limit those foods to special occasions and get back to the fruits and vegetables as much as possible. In fact, some fruits and veggies are the freshest in the winter. Check out this list of produce items that are in peak season during winter.
Also, if you’re trying to stay healthy this winter, don’t avoid your trips to the supermarket. Grocery shopping is another activity that people tend to avoid if it’s dark out. Try to plan your trips for the weekends to avoid this and avoid eating out multiple times per week.
Go for a swim.
There is no better time to hop in the pool than in the winter. Swimming is a great cardio alternative to help you stay healthy this winter, and you can do it all year round. Even if you just want to mix up one of your workouts, a quick pool session will have you feeling great! View our pool schedule to see the best times for a swim.
Try some alternative workouts.
In the summer, we can supplement our workout routine with some healthy outdoor activity, but that is not always an option in the winter. A great way to break the routine is to try some alternative workouts by taking fitness classes. At the Y, we offer a ton of fun workouts that range in time and difficulty. By using our group fitness schedule, you’re sure to find a class that works for you!
