We love kids at the Y. We love to see them play, see them laugh, see them learn, see them grow. These children are a big part of why we do what we do; we strive to provide them with an environment where they can both have fun and be healthy. But we also know that in today’s day and age, it can be hard to keep them active. So many other things are there to keep their attention, to keep them entertained. Here are some tips and ideas to increase your child’s fitness and health:
It Starts with You
Helping your kids become active starts, simply, with you. Children are a lot more observant than they are often given credit for. If they see you being active regularly, they’ll notice. And if you don’t, yet you insist on their activity, they’ll notice as well—we promise. Be active yourself, and your children will follow suit.
Choose “Activity” over “Exercise”
“Exercise” can often be a scary word and concept. So instead of insisting your children exercise for so long every day, encourage activity. Encourage games and classes and lessons that will get them moving. Basically, make it fun rather than something that they have to do.
Make a No-Screen Time
We live in a world where we are all constantly bombarded with screens and technology. To make sure your kids are staying active, consider establishing a no-screen time where they can play outside or do some type of other activity for at least 30 minutes each day. Making this a daily habit can positively influence your child’s learning and health.
Think of the Small Things
Every small thing counts and can affect your family and children’s health. Try to develop the small habits with your family members that can have an overall lasting effect. For instance, make it a habit to use the stairs instead of an elevator. If you make this a habit, it’ll be a habit for your kids too. Small things make a difference!
Make Fitness Part of Your Family’s Routine
Like we stated before, your children will follow your example when it comes to fitness and health. So make it a part of your family’s routine and get everyone involved! Plan family walks or family pickup basketball games or family swim time. There are so many things you could do based on your family’s interests and free time. Make it a priority and get everyone involved! It’ll be a much better experience for everyone that way as you have fun and be fit together.
