Get Your Heart Pounding at Grit: A Group Fitness Class Based on Interval Training

Grit 1

At the Lafayette Family YMCA, we recognize that our members are busy people. Between work, family, friends, and other activities, there is little to no time to stretch, sweat, and strengthen. As a result, we are excited to introduce Grit — a 30 minute, high-intensity class!

What is Grit?

Grit 2Created by Les Mills and introduced to gyms across the country in 2013, Grit is a small group training system that focuses on strength, plyometrics, and cardio and is scientifically designed to sculpt your unique body. Think of it as personal, customized training with a few friends.

You will start with an accelerated warm up and move into HIIT circuits that include explosive power moves, such as high-knee jumps and burpees. While you’re sweating, you’ll get to enjoy great music, awesome instructors, and a supportive environment that will make you want to come back!

Proven Results

Grit 3.1We can tell you how much fun Grit is (which, of course it is), but you probably also want to hear about the results.

In 2012, Penn State University tested two groups of 42 adult exercisers. Both groups completed three hours of cardio and two hours of light to moderate strength training every week for six weeks. While all participants completed the same professionally-designed routine, Group 2 swapped a 60 minute cardio session for two 30 minute Grit classes.

Both groups benefited from five hours of exercise a week, but Group 2’s benefits were much more obvious. Decreasing their body fat by 2.1%, Group 2 lost more than twice as much body fat than Group 1! Are you ready for these kind of results? With classes at both locations, the Lafayette Family YMCA makes it easy and convenient to find a class.

What You Can Expect from Grit

Grit 3Research proves that this program works, but what can you expect to get out of Grit?

  • Shaped and toned muscles
  • Increased endurance
  • Improved general fitness and well-being
  • Increased bone density
  • Maximum calorie burn at every class

Sign Up Now!

Because participants need personal attention for this program, we ask that participants register ahead of time. For YMCA members, Grit is only $3 a session! Simply pay the front desk before each class. You can also purchase a 10-class pass for $25.

Considering the intensity of the class, you will need to be cleared for physical activity by your physician before participating. It’s important to come prepared to sweat, and hydration is a must throughout the 30 minute class. Also, if it’s your first time, you will want to come a little early to get a few pointers from our awesome instructors. We want you to be comfortable and to enjoy your first Grit experience.

See You on Wednesdays and Fridays

Grit 4Grit classes are held at our 18th Street location on Wednesdays from 5:00 pm to 5:30 pm and on Fridays from 7:45 am to 8:15 am. Attire and What to Bring

You don’t need to bring any equipment for this class, but we do recommend bringing water and a towel because you’re going to sweat! Please also wear functional clothing and proper gym shoes.
