Now that the weather has warmed up and the kids are out of school, there are plenty of activities to help the family stay healthy and in shape this summer. Don’t forget the sunscreen!
Here are some ideas that we have for family fitness in the summer!
Looking for a good way to stay fit and cool off in the summer heat? Take a dip in the pool. While the kids splash and play, you can do a few laps. Swimming is a perfect way to stay in shape. Not only does it help with overall physical fitness, it helps with breathing control, muscle toning, and meditation. You can always join in on the fun with your family by starting a game of water volleyball. If you have younger ones, then you can teach them how to swim or let them take swimming lessons.
If your family loves nature, then taking a hike is a great way to explore and stay in shape. Be sure to wear the proper shoes, pack lots of water, and take breaks. Hiking is a great cardio workout that can build muscle in yours hips and legs, strengthen your core, improve your balance, and help control your weight. Stay safe and familiarize yourself with trails before you go. Take it slow and work your way up to the trails and paths with uneven terrain and hills. Find a trail that is fun and accessible to the whole family!
Taking a bike ride is another fun way to explore and stay fit. A great cardiovascular workout, biking helps reduce stress, improve joint mobility, lose weight, improve muscle strength, and strengthen bones. Make sure that everyone is safe by wearing helmets. If you’re biking with your kids, give them instruction on how to watch for traffic and stay close to you. Be sure to obey traffic regulations. Depending on where you live, many roads now have bike lanes. You can also find nice trails to bike on throughout the Lafayette area.
Summer is the perfect season for outdoor sports. Tennis, volleyball, baseball, soccer, and other activities are fun ways to spend time with the family. Not only does it teach the value of teamwork, it also helps to relieve stress, improve motor skills, encourage strategic thinking, and improve overall physical fitness. You don’t have to be good at it either. As long as you’re moving and having fun, then you’re doing great. Sport activities are also a great way to teach your kids life lessons on winning, losing, and leadership. Be sure to wear the proper clothing and footwear, stay hydrated, and keep a first-aid kit on hand for any injuries.
Visit a Local Park
Sometimes, having a picnic or taking a walk in the park is the perfect way to encourage family time and health. Packing a healthy lunch will help provide the nutrients and energy you need to stay active. Taking a walk or playing on the jungle gym are good ways to relieve stress and move your body.
