What is Zumba?
Zumba is a combination of Latin, hip-hop, salsa, and international music that sculpts your body with fun, easy-to-learn dance steps. It first became popular in Colombia during the 1990s when an aerobics instructor named Beto Perez improvised a class with non-traditional salsa music in place of aerobics music (because he accidentally left his planned work-out music at home!). Zumba kicked off in the United States in the early 2000s with home videos, but has since grown and now consists of 15 million people taking classes around the world, according to zumba.com. At the YMCA, each Zumba class is about an hour long and begins immediately with an upbeat, fun environment! Your instructor will then include world-renowned dances moves such as merengue, salsa, flamenco, and calypso into this cardio workout.You’ll get a warm-up, invigorating dance session, and cool-down with each class!
We offer Zumba classes every day at our 18th Street location between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. The Lafayette Family YMCA has plenty of times and instructors for you to choose from. Our 18th Street instructors are Tabitha, Caitlyn, Kristin, Brian, Sam, and Tammy. Brian also teaches a 5:30 p.m. Tuesday class at our Downtown location on Main Street. Several of our instructors are also Zumba Kids certified. This is a separate class that we offer year around (there is a small program fee when you register your child). This class is for 7-11 and very similar to our regular Zumba class. Kids will move, jam and dance to their favorite, upbeat songs. It’s a great way to have fun, but also get a great cardio workout.
Zumba is free for all Y members! This is a drop-in class, so no registration is required. Zumba classes are offered to all fitness levels, and teens over 15 can participate unaccompanied by an adult. Just make sure your physician clears you for physical activity before participating. Also, make sure you come a little early if you’re new to the class to get a few pointers from the instructor and so they can make sure you feel comfortable before getting started.
All you need is water, a sweat towel, comfortable clothes, tennis shoes, and a great attitude! Water is an essential since you’ll be moving and sweating a lot, so drink water before, during, and after your workout. You might want to bring a sweat towel as well. Wear proper gym shoes that fit well and support you. Loose-fitting clothes with breathable material for better air flow are best for Zumba.
Zumba offers many health benefits including increased flexibility, improved confidence, greater endurance, and high calorie burn. As a group fitness class, it’s a great way to connect with others; you can come with a group of friends or go on your own and make friends in the class along the way.
